The judicial ruling of pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and international powers have labeled the national security convictions politically motivated.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper declared that the lengthy imprisonment is effectively a de facto life term for the elderly man. She described the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation intended to muzzle Beijing's detractors. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and release him to his family.
“This verdict highlights how the imprecise and extensive clauses of Hong Kong’s security law can be interpreted in breach of universal rights standards,” stated top UN human rights official Volker Türk.
A representative for the European Union, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deeply regrets” the conclusion of the judicial process and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was detained following the enactment of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing in the wake of months of pro-democracy protests backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was found guilty on allegations encompassing conspiracy to produce seditious material and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The collusion allegations were brought under the controversial security law.
His son, Sebastien Lai, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation without seeing his family again. His international counsel labeled him the “planet's most prominent detainee” behind bars at present.
Sebastien Lai said that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, even as it offered some “relief” that the judicial farce had concluded.
This ruling has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. British leader Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping recently. Yet, the extent of progress in securing his freedom is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the value of enhanced diplomatic ties while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “rather incongruous.”
In contrast, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing endorsed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee said the sentence manifested that “the rule of law is upheld.”
A spokesperson for China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, called Lai the “chief architect” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and maintained the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in what he termed China's internal issues.
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders called Lai as a icon for diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “dark day for those who cherish a free press.”
Given an almost 100% conviction rate for national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is regarded as the most severe yet imposed under the controversial legislation.
