The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

An new acronym came to light a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors such as child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to care for a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on peace has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
