A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the company into poultry items has been replaced after conflicts with its governing body.
Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for more than two decades, had sought to shift Britain's biggest pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, commenting in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He observed chicken was the most rapidly expanding food category in the globe.
Sources suggest that there was friction between Rennie and the governance team over his focus and management style, although the company's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.
In September, the chain launched its chicken-focused brand – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the firm is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it regards chicken products as complementary to its main pizza offerings.
The Domino's chair, the company chair, said: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on identifying the right chief executive to oversee the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said sales dipped by 1.5 percent in the Q3. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it blamed reduced spending in the period before the budget and higher payroll outlays for below-target performance and a significant fall in half-year profits.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain announced the closure of dozens of outlets a last month, after the company behind its British operations entered insolvency.
Responding to market shifts towards better nutrition, the company has introduced lower-calorie items, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a small has 909 calories.
The interim chief has been with Domino's since the recent past, and had a background at the gambling company William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to take on the chief executive role on a full-time basis.
Frampton stated: “Our team has a several ongoing expansion and efficiency programs that we will be dedicated to carrying out at speed.”
She said these comprised additional efforts on the organization's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also in need of a full-time finance director until March 16, when Andrea starts from the beverage producer a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow is temporary CFO.
