A wheel detaches from the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with fellow driver Piastri at the start of the US GP sprint race.
McLaren Formula 1 bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella blamed competitors for the incident between Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint race.
The Australian driver, leading Norris in the standings by 22 points, crashed into his fellow McLaren driver after colliding with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
The incident took both McLaren drivers out of the event, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.
Zak Brown, the team's CEO, commented to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "inexperienced", remarking: "Clearly Nico made contact with Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
The team team principal Andrea Stella added: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we were denied the possibility to race."
"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise don't act with appropriate caution. Go to the first corner, ensure you avoid harming other drivers and continue."
McLaren clarified that the team principal was mentioning both Hulkenberg and Alonso.
However, former champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he thought Piastri had not shown enough understanding of the risks of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.
The Australian had a stronger launch than Norris and at first challenged on the outer side on the uphill approach to the corner.
But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to hit Hulkenberg.
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I tried to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Norris. A shame."
Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people behind just being a bit careless and we are the result of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outside changing direction and then I was there in the center."
The Sauber driver, who had qualified a best qualifying fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just messy."
"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I cannot vanish."
"I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Oscar turned in and the collision was unavoidable."
McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 10 PM BST on the weekend.
The team principal said: "In general disappointed but we accept it, we are now concentrating on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the possibility to race, race normally and capitalise on our performance."
"Championship points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be beneficial for everyone."
The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 behind of Norris.
Stella said: "The implication is what the maths show - we lost eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two strong racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."
Verstappen said he was approaching the championship one event at a time.
