Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
