Israelis have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks indicated that an late session of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have still not produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future management of the region

Citizen Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive return no one will be secure."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"When the dusk arrives, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.

"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city said additional dead people had been transported. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics said.

The territory's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
