Three police officers perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters approached the house near the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.
The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who escaped following the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been taken to hospital.
The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area showed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.
Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The official believed the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed local news, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the service of their country.
