The Yuletide season offer a wealth of activities considerably more enjoyable than checking the updates: discovering surprises, feasting on festive fare, and harnessing deep breathing to avoid yelling at relatives. It is wished you were able to accomplish all these things and more. That said, the world of entertainment doesn't go on vacation, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. Many exciting news items surfaced over the festive period, and just in case you didn't see any, here is a compilation of the juiciest bits.
Without a doubt the most surprising piece of news, the much-discussed troubled production that was season 3 of One-Punch Man wasn't enough to halt the series' continuation. The show will return with a second cour in 2027—such a distant date they easily could have dubbed it season 4. More surprisingly, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain at the helm. Thankfully this time, director Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the outset, which might be a positive development. However, the promotional image for the new episodes is the same image the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This leads one to believe that, by now, they could be mocking the fans.
Kyoto Animation has established a standing for being an elite animation studio, making its mark not just for the superb artistry of its productions but for the ethical practices of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Surprisingly, until now, it had not adapted an anime stemming from a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, possibly the most famous magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a excellent choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained massive popularity when it first appeared in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a lengthy break due to the mangaka's health issues. When it returned with a reduced workload, the series showed it maintained the fans' affection and goodwill, and now everyone is thrilled about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the highly popular, long-running Shueisha manga that is not One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English localization, but the anime has been running for a while, and its sixth season was a further excellent entry. Apparently that was just the initial batch, because a "sequel" has been announced as currently being made, and it will very likely air in 2026.
One more studio known for the artistic merit of its work, Science Saru has delivered masterpieces of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, lastly, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be taking on the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the actual historical person of Fatima, an powerful woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a truly original and fascinating visual style, which evokes Ranking of Kings. Set to premiere in July 2026, this one will without a doubt be on my list of anticipated shows.
Shortly after the conclusion of the final episode of the first season, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be receiving a second season. Based on the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki adapts the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a specific air date has not been disclosed yet.
